Parental Controls on your child’s Apple Devices (including iPad and iPhone)

Image_19_3_20_at_1.38_pm.jpg

At Foxwell State Secondary College we believe that parents and carers should have the tools to manage their children’s device usage.

We also believe that parents and carers are partners in learning, and that measures put in place for screen time in the home can assist in managing appropriate device usage and screen time both before, during and after the school day.

With Screen Time and Family Sharing, Apple provides parents and carers the tools to block and limit specific apps and features on their child’s device. These tools also allow parents and carers to access real-time reports on how much time their child is spending on their iPad, setting limits for usage of the device or specific applications.

We ask for the support of our parent community by requesting that when parent controls are set up, consideration is given to the following applications and their restriction during the school day:

  • Messages
  • Facetime
  • Social Media
  • Specific Games
  • Specific Websites

The following video outlines how to set up parental controls for your child’s iPad (and other Apple Devices).

We have become aware of a number of students who have social media accounts. Most social media platforms have strict terms and conditions in relation to minimum age, requiring in most instances for children to be at least 13 years of age. Creating accounts with false information is a violation of terms and conditions. This includes accounts registered on behalf of someone under 13. We recommend that parents conduct due diligence before allowing their child to sign up for a social media platform, including being aware of terms, conditions and privacy policies. We also suggest that regular vigilance is conducted to ensure student e-safety.
