Deputy Principal's Update

A message from the Acting Principal...

It was wonderful seeing so many parents and carers on Tuesday evening at our first Student Led Conferences for 2023. Our new format conferences allowed parents and carers the opportunity to meet their child's teacher ahead of, what will be for many classes, final submission of assessments for Term 1, with feedback ideally assisting parents and carers in supporting their child as they apply draft feedback.

Ahead of our upcoming P&C AGM, I would like to personally thank our 2022 Executive Committee for their hard work and dedication to providing opportunities for Foxwell SSC students, parents and teachers. 2022 was our most successful year yet for our P&C, boasting another successful Colour Explosion, their first Bunnings BBQ, operating the canteen for our first college Musical, hosting the first Meet the Politicians morning tea, as well as many other exciting and prosperous ventures. Thank you to:

President, Roz Rowe

Vice President, Tarena Pomeroy

Secretary, Michael Cowling

Treasurer, Krish Ravipati

Grants Officer, Michelle Digby

As we finalise our preparation for upcoming NAPLAN tests, I want to wish all of our students the best of luck. Remember that these tests are just one small part of your academic journey. Stay calm, stay focused, and do your best. I have every confidence in you. Good luck!

Kate Shepherd

Acting Principal

Foxwell State Secondary College

It is always great to sit down at the end of a week and reflect on the week that was. This week we have seen our Year 7s step up and engage in some exam style assessments. The rigour of exam conditions and the exams themselves are often challenging for some students. By and large, our students have coped well and I am sure they have tried their best to be successful.

I have also seen our Year 7 students, this week, be more settled and focussed in classrooms than in previous weeks. It appears that the new and sometimes different routines and procedures of high school are becoming more natural and comfortable for them. You should be proud of their transition.

Reminders:

  • If your child requires any additional support, WIN time is available before school from 8am and after school between 3pm and 4pm. School staff will be available at these times to support students with completing assessment or homework.
  • Students are not permitted on school grounds before 8am unless they are partcipating in a school organised activity.
  • Students out of uniform are required to bring a note of explanation and to report to Student Services prior to the start of the school day to acquire a Uniform Variation slip.
  • Black lace up shoes and white socks [ankle length] are required to be worn at all times with black leather shoes worn with the formal uniform and on days when students are accessing laboratories, workshops or kitchens.
  • Chewing gum is not permitted at school.
  • The first bell rings at 8.35am and students should be in the grounds and moving to class at this time. Students are required in class, by 8.45am, ready to learn.

Last week we were lucky enough to have a Year 7 Assembly where we were able to celebrate some student achievements and provide some further clarification of our expectations to the newest members of our Foxwell community.

Our assemblies usually run for 30 minutes and are a combination of notices, celebrations and reminders. If your child has any specific achievement(s) you would like us to celebrate on our Year 7 assemblies, please ensure you let us know.

I have included the presentation we gave to students, so you can learn more about our school, our expectations and for you to be assured, that we actively teach, and often re-teach, these expectations to our students. At Foxwell we want all students to feel like they belong, to feel safe and to feel supported.

NAPLAN is here for our Year 7s. Please see the detailed information provided in this bulletin.

Please ensure that your child is prepared for each NAPLAN session and that:

  • the browser is downloaded
  • their iPad is fully charged
  • they have corded headphones available
  • they bring with them their, 'can do', positive attitude

NAPLAN testing is a point in time test now provides us with valuable infomration about what students can and cannot do in term of Literacy and Numeracy. This information helps us to design learning opportunities to meet the needs of our students.

As always, please feel free to reach out to, firstly, Mr Berrell and secondly myself, should you have any questions, concerns or comments which you would like to raise with us. We look forward to continuing to build posiive and productive realtionships with you and your children.
