Deputy Principal's Update

Di_Nic.jpg

The final two weeks of the term are upon us and so much is happening as we prepare for Semester 2, our final semester of The Compass Years and of compulsory schooling for our Year 10s. Lately, I have enjoyed so many robust and exciting conversations with our Year 10 students as they start to explore and plan their pathways into senior schooling. Over 100 students attended the Gold Coast Careers Festival last week, with all students representing our College with exemplary conduct. Please continue to have conversations with your child about their thoughts and ideas as they begin planning for the next phase of their educational journey.

Our next key event is our SET-P Meetings, during which every student, together with their parents/carers, will meet with a senior member of staff to develop their plan for 2024/25. All students, state-wide, are required to engage in this process, regardless of whether they intend to continue into Year 11 or not. Please note the following key dates, relevant to all Year 10 students:

DATE CLAIMERS

Senior Education and Training Plan

  • Student learning and engagement sessions during Fusion classes on Tuesday 13 and 20 June 2023
  • SET-P Meetings on Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 July 2023
  • Love Bites Program on Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 July 2023

Students will attend school on the day of their SET-P meeting for their SET-P appointment only. They will attend the Love Bites Program on the other day.

Next week, we will open up bookings for these meetings so please continue to check your email regularly, including the junk/spam folder.

YEAR 11 COURSE SELECTIONS - ROUND 1

Student will complete selections in Week 9. From here, we will shortlist/form lines for our course selections for Year 11 and then finalise our planning and organisation of courses. It is imperative that every student takes this process seriously as their selections will impact our overall delivery of curriculum. Please remind your child to ensure that they:

1) have their iPad at all times;

2) check their emails daily;

3) check SharePoint daily;

4) can access OneSchool.

All students will engage in an information and training session on Tuesday 13 June in preparation for completing this process.

SEMESTER 2 TIMETABLE

Class Re-grouping and Allocations

In Semester 2, all Year 10 classes will be re-configured based on the following considerations:

  • Personal Endeavour Courses: students will now study three instead of two courses. This is due to the discontinuation of students in HPE and History, unless they have chosen courses from those KLAs as their PECs;
  • Compass Courses: Students will experience two instead of one Compass Course (loss of four lessons for HPE and History but allocation of three lessons to one additional PEC means there is a lesson extra). This will be the decision if we are able to staff accordingly in this space. We will update as we continue into next term.
  • English and Maths: these classes will be reconfigured based on our most recent data. Students/families will receive a recommended program for learning based on this recent data as well as possible future pathways. Consultations will occur where relevant.

Curriculum Offerings – PECs

It is hoped that students will receive notification of their courses for Semester 2 by the end of this term. Given that these courses form the most significant portion of each student’s timetable, while also providing an insight into the course options in Year 11, it is imperative that due attention and consideration is given to finalising these selectison before the commencement of courses in Term 3.

TAFE, INDUSTRY AND OTHER OPPORTUNITIES

We will continue to advertise/offer opportunities for TAFE, Industry and other opportunities via emails to students. Staff will provide a simple topic statement in each email to assist students in determining the relevance of emails as well as the organisation of their emails. By issuing information in this way, students will be able to receive direct links etc. to respond or follow-up on the information provided.

REPORT CARDS

Report cards will be issued at the end of term. Please take that opportunity to discuss with your child their overall achievement, progress, areas of strength and development, and their future plans as they reflect on their results. This process will also be supported in our Fusion classes in Term 3.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our students at this busy time. With assessment almost complete, we can look forward to a very well-deserved break.

Have a great weekend!

Ms Di Nicolas
