Principal's Report

As we move towards the end of the school year we continue to celebrate the achievements of our students, staff and school community, and also begin to plan for 2021.
This week we took our whole-school Foundation year photo, which will be sure to act as a significant piece of memorabilia for decades to come.
We have sent home a package today with students with a number of important pieces of information. The package includes an order form for our whole-school Foundation Year photo if you would like to purchase your very own piece of Foxwell State Secondary College history.
We have also included in the package important information in preparation for the 2021 year, such as stationery lists and app lists. If you are not returning to Foxwell in 2021, or will be commencing the school year later than Day 1, please be sure to contact our Administration Office to inform them.
Remember if you need to purchase new uniforms, please make your booking with the Uniform Store as soon as possible, as booking appointments are filling quickly.
Please be sure that you are fully aware of our Student Dress Code so your child can continue to meet our agreed standards of dress and presentation from Day 1 2021. This includes ensuring that the shoes meet our standards and all health and safety requirements.
If you know of any families who have not yet completed their enrolment application, please remind them to do this urgently so that their child can attend the upcoming Transition Day.
Today our Advanced Learning Program (ALP) students visited QUT. You can tell by these photos how much they enjoyed the day and how special this day was for each of them. Thank you to Mr Kerwin and QUT for this unique opportunity.
From Mr Kerwin:
The Advanced Learning Program students have studied a range of topics across the first twelve months of high school. The current group of students has maintained a constant interest in technology-related topics ranging from how computers work, to using drone technology to solve a local problem.
Within the 17 Global Goals, opportunity arose for the team to use their knowledge and curiosity to seek to understand affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, and climate action. We arranged for the students to spend the day in a Wind Turbine workshop run by engineering and mechatronics students at QUT Gardens Point.
The Young Accelerators workshops at QUT provided secondary students with well structured, and highly engaging, tasks designed for the students to participate in inquiry learning. A range of opportunities were provided to the students throughout the day. Students participated in discussion, used reasoning and justification skills.
After researching gears, turbines and generators, a key part of the excursion has seen the group construct their own wind turbine devices, and then test how much energy is generated by using differently angled blades. Students recorded the results in an Excel spreadsheet. Prior knowledge using Excel formulae assisted the students in understanding how to calculate averages and wattage production to then determine which type of blade performed the best.
As would be expected, our Foxwell ALP students represented our school very well. Very proud of the team.

What a year it has been! We are getting very excited about our Celebration of Success evening. I look forward to seeing ALL students with their families on this evening. The full details will be outlined further in this newsletter. This will be a wonderful opportunity to both formally and informally celebrate all that has been achieved this year.
We encourage you to consider nominating your child for one for the prestigious Special Awards that will be presented on the evening.
Until next time
