- Are your children safe online?

Regardless of the complexities of this year, our school and staff have remained focused on providing a ‘world of opportunities’ for all students at Foxwell.
This has included the many extra-curricular activities that students have engaged in, but most importantly it has been our relentless focus on ensuring ‘success’ for all of our students. At Foxwell State Secondary College, when we refer to success, it is our students developing strong relationships, connecting, contributing and gaining fulfilment by flourishing academically, personally, socially and emotionally.
Through our Inclusive Education focus, we actively ensure that teachers know and understand each of their students, and intentionally cater for their unique needs. This can include extending and challenging students in their learning, sporting or creative pursuits, or providing support and intervention in both the academic and social areas.
At the upcoming P & C Meeting, our parents and community members will have another opportunity to provide feedback around our definition of ‘success’ and how we are progressing in catering for the needs of all learners. I encourage parents to join the meeting to have your say.
We are very proud of our school culture, and the ‘vibe’ parents, visitors, students and staff speak about as they discuss our school culture and environment. We intentionally focus on ensuring our school is a safe, supportive and inclusive school and the feedback from various stakeholders acknowledges our success in these areas. We greatly appreciate the positive feedback, however we also value the suggestions made, as we are always looking for ways to further improve.
Please don’t wait for a survey to have your say. If you wish to make suggestions please feel free to email admin@foxwellssc.eq.edu.au. In Week 4 of Term 4 our school will undergo the Foundation Year School Review by the Department’s Education Improvement Branch. During this review, staff, students, parents and community members can reflect on our successes and next steps in our school journey.
Our ‘worlds’ are not simply a clever or fun way to name our subjects. Our Worlds are carefully developed units of learning that align to the Australian Curriculum.
Although the learning areas are connected through teaching and learning to enhance our students’ deep learning outcomes, all students will continue to be assessed and reported on across the eight individual learning areas.
If parents want more detailed information, please contact Ms Zana Schroeder (Deputy Principal). Through ongoing conversations with our students and teachers, we can see the significant benefits to our students' self-understanding, knowledge, competency and connection.
Official School Opening
Next Friday, 11th September is a momentous day for our school community. Education Minister Grace Grace will officially open our school at the ceremony. Arrival at 9.15am for a 9.45am start in our Sports Performance Centre.

COVID-19 – Safety and wellbeing
We continue to monitor the changing situation across Queensland in relation to COVID-19 and assure all parents should any infection become known in our school community, weill provide advice immediately. Some very important reminders to parents and students: Ensure hand hygiene, stay home if you are sick & do not share food and drinks with friends
(We have become aware that some students share food and drinks with friends and classmates. This is not an appropriate practice and will not be condoned by our school staff.)
There will be no class ‘parties’ or sharing of food and we ask that parents do not send in birthday cakes or other shared items at this time).
We appreciate your understanding, as we all work together to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our community.
Until next time,
Mrs Kym Amor

RU OK? Day 10th September 2020
R U OK?Day (Thursday 10 September, 2020) is our national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that every day is the day to ask, “Are you OK?” and support those struggling with life's ups and downs.
This year's message is 'There's more to say after R U OK?'
A range of circumstances can lead to a young person feeling low, including:
- Big life changes like moving house or school
- Experiencing grief or loss
- Being around people going through tough times
- Being bullied
- Arguing with someone
- Problems with school work
- Being bored
- Having a medical condition or chronic illness
- Not sleeping well
- Not exercising enough
- Hormonal changes
- Special needs
Be aware of certain behaviours and signs that can indicate a young person might be struggling. The first thing to look out for is changes in behaviour. When people feel low, they often:
- Withdraw from their friends or their family
- Lash out at people and get angry or upset really easily, including towards the people they care about
- Cry or become emotional
- Lose interest in activities and things they usually love Have changed sleeping patterns.
- They might be sleeping all the time, not sleeping much at all, or sleeping at strange hours (such as in the middle of the day)
- Have a changed appetite. They could be eating more than usual, or less.
R U OK? has 4 Conversation Steps to help navigate a conversation when someone says, “No, I’m not OK”. These steps are:
Useful contacts when a young person is not OK:
Guidance Officer
School Chaplain
GP or psychologist
Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800
Lifeline on 13 11 14
Dial 000 if someone’s life is in imminent danger
We are excited to announce that Shock Therapy Productions will come and perform their incredible play, “The Stones” to all year 7 students in Week 3 of Term 4. During the Enrich period on Wednesday 28th October, students will be engaged in this production performed by Sam Foster and Hayden Jones. “The Stones” is based on a true story about 2 boys aged 13 and 15 who are charged with manslaughter after kicking rocks off a freeway overpass and killing a motorist.
This play is about risk taking behaviour and the pain of guilt when things go too far. It places the audience in the position of a jury where they must consider whether the boys are responsible for their actions, or too young to know what they were doing. This is such an honour for our students to engage with this educational piece. This even will be a co-contribution by parents of $5 per student which will be invoiced as part of our Positive Education and Enrich program in Week 1 of Term 4.
Sporting Minds Excursion to Rigs Recovery
This term Sporting Minds' students have visited RIGS Recovery Centre as a part of our Sporting Minds Program of Excellence. RIGS Recovery Centre delivered an exceptional workshop for students, outlining recovery techniques aimed at speeding up recovery to get the best out of performance. Students experienced both compression and hydro therapy.

We are excited to announce that entries are now open for Foxwell State Secondary College's inaugural Japanese Art Competition!
Foxwell students are invited to create an original artwork inspired by Hokusai's 'Great Wave off Kanagawa' (1829-1833). Any medium can be used (eg. paper, paint, water colours, digital, sculpture).
All artwork entries are to be submitted to Miss Yoshino by the end of Term 3 (18th September) with winners to be announced in the first assembly of Term 4 (13 October).
We can't wait to see what creativity transpires!
This 2020 Drama Festival journey has been one of perseverance, accepting our individual differences and having the ability to believe in the unknown. By understanding others' opinions and learning to listen to each other, this group of incredible students have learnt that team building and communication are key attributes in defining our individual character.
The group of 17 students performed the play, “Over the Wall” by James Saunders which is about an island, on which lived a people, no better and no worse than most. Defined by the great wall that encircles their world, the inhabitants of this island don’t know life to be any different; they live in their own bubble where conversation about the wall is what keeps them occupied. Whether they hate the wall, or love the wall, or have an indifferent opinion, no one is game to find out what is over the wall. Or are they?
I am so grateful to have had this opportunity to work with such an incredible group of passionate students. I hope they have found this experience as rewarding as I have. We look forward to seeing the amazing work they produce in years to come.
Mrs McLennan

Science Week at Foxwell continued to build our students’ scientific knowledge, skills, and interest.
Thank you to Head of Science, Ms Crowe and all of our Physical World - Science teachers for bringing this love of Science to life, not only for Science Week, but every day.

Foxwell State Secondary College was fortunate to participate in the Boys NRL Nines Rugby League tournament on Tuesday, 1st September. The boys from Foxwell had a great day and really showed their capacity to be resilient and persevere throughout the whole day. We were proud that within the development division and with little preparation and training, they were able to hold their own in all of their matches.
As part of our growth as a foundation school we are grateful for our partnership with the Coomera Cutters Rugby League Club. They were extremely generous in providing us with jerseys for the playing team members. We hope to grow this partnership further as we grow as a school and in particular have more young developing rugby league players at our school.
Thank you to Mr Henry and Mr Kumar for coaching and managing this fine group of footballers.

Foxwell SSC presents Apple Leadership Series in Singapore
It was an honour to share our digital pedagogies narrative with school leaders across Singapore in the Apple Leaders in Education series. We covered building a culture of ‘leveraging digital’ to transform, redefine and accelerate learning.
Thank you to the Apple Education Development team for an amazing opportunity. We are looking forward to our continued partnership.
