Athletics Carnival - Friday 18th June
We are getting excited about our 2021 Athletics Carnival which will take place next Friday 18 June.
This is a free event for the whole College. All students will meet at the College at our regular start time and then travel by bus to the Griffith University Athletics Track in Southport.
All Students who arrive at School will be transported to the track. There will be no regular classes or staff supervision of students on this day.
Students must wear full sports uniform and sports hat but are able to bring along house coloured accessories, shirts to wear over the top of sports uniforms, temporary hair colour and face paint.
Parents/carers are also welcome to attend but we ask that you remain in the designated parent areas on the day. Please note there will be limited parking.
Permission forms came home this week by email and as a hard copy and these must be returned by Tuesday 15 June for students to be able to attend.
There is also a permission form that must be completed and returned by students who would like to compete in high-risk events, such as high jump, discus or javelin.
Most events will be completed on the day; however, 1500m, 800m and javelin will be held at school during lunchtimes in Week 10.
We encourage all students to come along for a fun-filled day outside and a great opportunity to build house and school spirit!!
As camp grows closer and we are nearer to finalising all the details and sending permission forms out, there have been a few more details which we can now confirm around activities and facilities.
The camp will be set up to cater for all levels of challenge from your standard style camp (bunk rooms, mess hall, toilet blocks, showers) through to the challenging expedition style camp (tents, hiking to camp grounds, student food cooking and preparation, composting toilets/wet wipes and dam showers).
Although we hope that all children will want to experience both styles of camp - for a night each (or two nights of challenge) to help develop their resilience, teamwork and ability to come together as a group, we understand that not all children may feel comfortable with an expedition experience.
Students will be asked shortly to indicate their preferences for style of camp. Both styles of camp options will provide children with a similar (not the same) range of activities. Both styles of camp will run at the same time and will be offered to all children from the outset.
Activities at Camp Kokoda whether children elect to enage in the expedition ot the standard style camp option, will possibly include high and low ropes courses, canoeing, team challenge activities, orienteering, abseiling, flying fox, archery and bush skills.
Just letting families know early, that our camp will be a technology-free zone so no phones or iPads will be permitted during the 2-night, 3-day camp. We predict that this may be the biggest challenge for many of our tech savvy students. Staff members will, at all times, be available to students should there be any need for contact between home and themselves.
Camp Kokoda will be a great opportunity for students to further develop their resilience and self-confidence; increases in these areas can have lifelong positive effects on children in particular their sense of personal pride and self-reliance.
Countdown is on, more information in the weeks ahead.

2021 Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey
In Week 9 & 10 of this term, students will be asked to take part in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey. Students will be sent an email link to the survey, which they will complete during one of their Healthy World lessons.
We know that wellbeing and engagement are important to your child’s life at school. The Department and the College are looking at ways to collect information on these important areas so we can support our students in the best way possible.
The QEW Survey is designed to measure how state school students view their wellbeing and engagement. Results from this survey will tell us about students’ levels of wellbeing and engagement. This information will allow us to better support our students and meet their needs.
Please refer to the attached document for further information. If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact Victoria Leadbeatter, Head of Inclusion, on vlead1@eq.edu.au
