As our third term draws to a close we can reflect on the achievements of our students, school and staff this year.
In this most complex of years we can be very proud of the perseverance, inclusivity and teamwork demonstrated by our student, staff and parents.
I acknowledge the positive and open communication between parents and staff and know that this is a significant factor in the successful outcomes for our students.
WHAT IS SUCCESS AT FOXWELL?
After significant consultation over the past months with staff, students, parents, community members, and school partners, we can now define success for our school.
SUCCESS AT FOXWELL IS BEING EMPOWERED AS A LEARNER; CONNECTING, CONTRIBUTING AND FLOURISHING - ACADEMICALLY, PERSONALLY, SOCIALLY AND EMOTIONALLY.
We can all support our students to be successful by guiding, encouraging, supporting them in their academic, sporting, cultural pursuits, but equally importantly can guide them to make considered choices in their behaviours, relationships, and contribution to our local and wider community.
CYBER-BULLYING – LET’S STAND TOGETHER
It can be difficult to navigate the online world, and for young people it can be made even more challenging if technology is being used to bully or hurt them. Cyberbullying can cut deeper than face-to-face bullying because it often plays out in public forums and it can be hard to escape.
The Queensland Government has launched two new education and awareness campaigns to help young people and their parents and carers stop cyberbullying together.
Swipe it away aims to empower young people to take the power back from the bullies and encourages them to talk with someone they trust to come up with a plan and navigate cyberbullying together.
The Stand by us campaign targets parents, carers and trusted adults and lets them know how they can best help and support young people experiencing cyberbullying. The campaign is complemented by free cyberbullying seminars run by Triple P – Positive Parenting Program and online training and resources from Parentline.

At Foxwell State Secondary College we take our stand against bullying and violence in all forms, very seriously. We will continue to work with student and their families when we are made aware of cyber-bullying that impacts our school, and we involve our partners in Queensland Police where appropriate. Please continue to support us to support your child at school, by being vigilant and teaching about respectful relationships at home.
SCHOOL OPINION SURVEY
During Term 3 the Department sought feedback from staff and parents of Foxwell State Secondary College about their experiences in 2020, and in particular through the Remote Learning Period. We are very pleased and proud of the survey results and will share some highlights here. The full report will be discussed at the next P & C Meeting.

We are currently finalising our processes for Reporting on learning for Semester 2 2020, for which we expect to be able to issue a full Report Card for all subjects. It is our intention that the Report Card is a helpful tool in providing feedback to your child and family, while supporting conversations and activities at home to empower and support your child in achieving success in her/his learning and experiencing personal accomplishment.
As we prepare for our reporting on Semester 2 learning, we are seeking your feedback and suggestions regarding the composition of Report Cards in future reporting cycles. There are some Department and Education Queensland requirements to which we must adhere; however, we value your contribution in ensuring that our Report Cards and Reporting Processes meet your child's and family's needs.
Please click on the link below to access the survey, which should take approximately 3 minutes to complete. We thank you for your time and interest in completing this survey.
A number of families have been contacted in relation to unpaid invoices.
If your student is currently participating in an Excellence Program and you have not paid the relevant Excellence Program fee or the Student Resource Scheme, they will not be permitted to continue within the program.
Upon enrolment, all families signed the Student Resource Scheme Participation Form. By signing this form, Parents/Carers agreed to pay the nominated fee towards the SRS.
If you have an outstanding amount owing on your Students account, you will be unable to join the Scheme for 2021 and will need to provide all textbook licences, apps, software and resources for your students learning.
If you are having financial difficulties, please contact our Business Manager - Kimberley Knowles via email - kknow13@eq.edu.au
Did you know that you can have a deduction paid directly to Foxwell from your Family Tax Benefit?
You can nominate a fixed amount to be paid form your Family Tax Benefit directly to the School to cover your child's education costs. Please contact us via email for a CentrePay Application form at finance@foxwellssc.eq.edu.au
Parent-Teacher Conferences – Term 4
We know the value of working in close partnership with families so that all students are supported in their learning. Our Parent-Teacher Conferences in Term 2 were very helpful in allowing families and teachers to focus specifically on students, their achievement, effort and learning behaviour, and which strategies could be implemented in working towards improvement. In Term 4, our intention is to provide this opportunity for families and teachers to again engage in these conversations, though the format will be quite different. For this cycle of conferences, we ask that families do the following:
1. Engage in conversations with your child regarding their learning in Term 3.
2. Ask your child to share their Planning for Personal Accomplishment documentation, developed early in Term 3, and work together to reflect on how your child has progressed in relation to their plan and overall Term 3 learning experience. Your child will have other information to discuss with you, such as teacher feedback, results for assessment and reflections completed in class.
3. If you wish to engage in a Parent-Teacher Conference with a particular teacher or teachers, contact the teacher/s via email and schedule a time for a 10-minute conference regarding your child. THESE MEETINGS ARE TO BE SCHEDULED DURING WEEK 2 OF TERM 4, MONDAY 12 OCTOBER TO FRIDAY 16 OCTOBER. Teachers will endeavour to respond to your requests as quickly as possible. Some teachers will be available between 9.00am and 3.00pm if they are not in scheduled classes or other work-related sessions. Teachers will not be able to engage in conversations after 5.30pm. The teacher may request to engage with you via Zoom or telephone.
The full list of teachers’ email addresses is provided below.
4. In preparing for the conference, have some notes and questions ready, as well as pen and paper to take notes on your discussion.
This process should provide a little more flexibility for families in scheduling times to conference with teachers about their children’s learning. We look forward to sharing these conversations with you.
This term saw instrumental music students working towards an assessment at level 4 of the Curriculum which involved learning a new scale combined with technical exercises to be played at various speeds. This helps coordination between decoding the new scale to coordinating the fingers to get the correct notes. It is important to get out of the comfort zone to learn new techniques to be able to play new and exciting music.
The whole band has been working on several new pieces to help consolidate the band's playing. Declaration and Procession of the Cyborgs have rhythmic drive whilst the Theme from Jurassic Park is just a beautiful melody to play.
Three interesting facts about me, Mr Donnelly: my main instrument is the oboe, I lived in Germany for 20 years, I enjoy long distance ocean swimming all year!
Next term the band is looking forward to playing our new pieces at an assembly in front of a live audience which we all miss greatly. It is important for musicians to play and receive immediate feedback from an audience. I can’t wait to continue working with the band in Term 4.

On Monday September 14 the Foxwell College eSports Team competed in the FUSE Cup Gold Coast Rocket League competition held at Hillcrest Christian College. Like physical sports, eSports is guided by a code of ethics where students show kindness and support for each other and the other teams, and compete in a safe digital environment. Will R, Zane D, Jack T, Alfie M, Tyler W, Kaden D, Dion W, Isaac O, represented Foxwell College at the tournament. In a hall filled with cheering, excitement, games lighting, and large game-play monitors, the boys participated well and demonstrated our school SPIRIT values throughout the day.
All eight boys have played exceptionally well today with two of our pairs, Alfie and Will, and Zane and Kaden, making it into semi-finals. While we were not champions on the digital field on the day, we were champions in our care and respect for each other.
eSports has become a thriving business both locally and internationally. As our students continue with the journey into eSports game play, we will also look for opportunities for them to become eSports game creators. In Term 4 Foxwell State Secondary College will host the FUSE Cup Gold Coast Mario Kart tournament. Students are encouraged to join eSports for Term 4 for possible inclusion in our competition team.
We are excited to announce that Shock Therapy Productions will come and perform their incredible play, “The Stones” to all year 7 students in Term 4. During the Enrich period on Wednesday 28th October, students will be engaged in this production performed by Sam Foster and Hayden Jones. “The Stones” is based on a true story about 2 boys aged 13 and 15 who are charged with manslaughter after kicking rocks off a freeway overpass and killing a motorist.
This play is about risk taking behaviour and the pain of guilt when things go too far. It places the audience in the position of a jury where they must consider whether the boys are responsible for their actions, or too young to know what they were doing. This is such an honour for our students to engage with this educational piece. This even will be a co-contribution by parents of $5 per student which will be invoiced as part of our Positive Education and Enrich program in Week 1 of Term 4.
