This week, Year 7 and 8 students have engaged in hands on learning in their Maths classes.
Year 7s have participated in treasure hunts and rotation activities connecting real world ideas to their learning of measurement and shape.
In Year 8, students have engaged in collaborative activities learning about circles and how Pi is one of the coolest concepts in Maths! They have used their iPads to discover and record circular shapes in the school, then applied Mathematical knowledge to calculate and solve various real world problems.

TERM 4 Week 7 2021
SCIENCE WEEK
Foxwell had guest appearances from famous scientists during Science Week, including:
All were prominent scientists and added to our knowledge and understanding of the many facets of science. Galileo’s work was in the area of astronomy and telescopes; Ms Franklin worked in X-rays, which showed the structure of DNA and viruses; Sir Newton worked in so many areas and famously gave us the theory of gravity, an understanding of white light and calculus; and Stephen Hawking worked extensively in the vast unknown world of space, specialising in exploding black holes.
The theme for Science Week 2021 was Food: Different by design. The Science faculty, with the assistance from teachers in all departments, made available 26 sensational activities for students to participate in: too many to list here, but just a few of the activities included makin: ice cream and butter, edible DNA, rock candy, sherbet, solar ovens with edible s’mores. All of these popular sessions had a common theme of creating food to eat at the end of the experiment. YUM! Thank you to all students and staff for your involvement in our fantastic Science Week activities.

Technology violations are becoming unacceptably regular with more students using their iPads in ways which are prohibited at the College.
Playing Games During Lessons
There is an increasing number of students who have been caught playing games during lesson time. This is unacceptable as it erodes learning time.
Our teachers put consequences in place when students engage in technology violations by playing games or being on apps/websites which are not directly related to their learning.
In most instances, the natural consequence is that students must make up any lost learning time during a lunch break. Students with repeated technology violations have received more serious consequence which have included after-school detentions. We will continue to monitor iPad usage and put in appropriate consequences in place.
Disconnecting from or Failing to Connect to Apple Classroom
Teachers are able to monitor iPad use only when students are connected to Apple Classroom.
Students are required, every lesson, to connect to Apple Classroom. Some students however, are misbehaving and failing to follow instructions to either connect to, or remain connected to, Apple Classroom.
This is unacceptable as it means that teachers cannot monitor students' iPad usage in order to support students to maximise engagement in learning.
Use of iMessage During the School Day
Students are prohibited from sending iMessages in fact any form of electronic message, during the school day. This includes messaging services used to make contact with parents/carers or friends/family.
If your child needs to contact you, they may come to Student Services and we will arrange contact through appropriate methods. Alternately, if you need to contact your child, please call Student Services and we will make arrangements for the message to be provided to your child or for your child to call you should that be necessary.
If your child is unwell or upset and wishes to contact home, please remind them to use the correct channels and to report to Student Services where we can provide them with support and make arrangement for parent/carer contact.
Parents/carers, please do not arrive at Student Services asking to collect a child who may have contacted you through electronic messaging as you are enabling your child to be irresponsible and to break College rules. Consequences will be applied for breaching College rules.
Use of Social Media for Harassment of Others
A small number of students are using Social Media to deliver disrespectful messages. These messages are delivered outside of school hours but have potential to cause conflict at school. If you become aware of abusive or threatening messages, we encourage you to make reports to the eSafety Commissioner and/or Police.
It is not the College's responsibility to manage issues which arise on Social Media unless they indicate potential for direct conflict on College grounds.
Please be aware of your child's activity on Social Media and work with us to ensure that our students feel safe, both on-line and in our community.
If you consider there is a need for enacting parental controls such as screen time on your child's device to curb access to inappropriate apps and ICT misbehaviours during the school day, please access the instructions below.
Screen Time https://support.apple.com/en-au/guide/ipad/ipadb15cb886/ipados
Thank you for your continued support in ensuring that all students abide by the College Technology/IT Agreement and use their valuable iPad to truly accelerate and deepen their learning.
All College fees are now overdue.
Statements were sent via email to all families with outstanding fees this week.
Payment is required for your student to continue having access to the apps, resources and texts that the College offers under the Student Resource Scheme.
Students with outstanding fees may not be able to attend excursions or camps.
Payment Plans are available! Either CentrePay or Direct Debit plans are accessible for all families.
Do you receive Family Tax Benefit A or B from Centrelink? If so, you can nominate a fixed amount to be paid from your Family Tax Benefit directly to the College to cover your child's education costs. Please contact us via email to set up your payment plan: finance@foxwellssc.eq.edu.au

COLOUR EXPLOSION FUN RUN
This exciting event is coming soon! Please ensure all students participating are registered before the 14th of September to be able to enjoy this fun experience. Students need to raise a minimum of $10 to participate. The more you raise, the greater the prizes to be won.
For any enquiries or extensions to payments / payment plans, please contact the P&C on pandc@foxwellssc.eq.edu.au.
To make this a dynamic event, we are after community help with any of the following:
Weed spray pump containers (clean)
Super soakers
Spray bottles
Cargo nets
Ropes
Black plastic for slip and slide
Ice for a possible ice bath
Foam machine
Tyres
Hay Bales
As we are a new school, our resources are limited and we need as much help as we can to make this an excellent event for our students.
We will be following government guidelines on heath advice on the day. If we are able to have parents and carers on the schools grounds, we would love your help to set up, have fun with the students and pack up. Any help is gratefully received. Please email us on pandc@foxwellssc.eq.edu.au. We aim to make this as much fun for the students as we can.
Thank you, and stay safe

Dance Troupe
… and we’re back!
What a crazy term it has been, but the Foxwell SSC Dance Troupe has continued to prepare for the upcoming Star Bound competition on Thursday 9th September.
During lockdown, Dance Captain, Josie, prepared a wonderful tutorial for the team as we modified our second routine and, on our return to school, we have managed to revise set choreography whilst aligning with the government restrictions.
As the dance troupe coordinator, I wish to commend the perseverance of this team; the masks have certainly been a challenge, yet there were no complaints.
Please find details of upcoming competition:

Instrumental Music in full swing
It was so nice to see and hear the Choir, Strings and Band students back in action after a 3 week hiatus. The students thoroughly enjoyed being able to play as an ensemble once again, even with their masks. We are looking forward to the Strings students being able to compete in the Gold Coast Eisteddfod through a video submission at the end of this term and know these students will do Foxwell proud.
Our Arts Showcase is also coming up so please save the date – Wednesday 20th October (Week 3, Term 4).

This term in G-STEM, students are pursuing a STEM passion project of their own choice. With the help from their PhD mentors, who are part of the Wonder of Science program, students will explore their chosen project, eventually producing work which will be presented to an audience – you!
We invite you to our Up and Atom G-STEM Fair on Tuesday 14th September between 4pm and 5pm, where you will be able to experience the amazing passion projects of our students. Students will showcase their projects in the style of a learning-fair and explain what they have learned through their inquiry process.
At the Up and Atom G-STEM Fair, the People’s Choice awards will be awarded to five students based on votes. Parents, students, and the community will have the opportunity to vote and help decide on these award winners during this event.
At the end of this term, one student in Year 7 and one student in Year 8 will be awarded the Spirit of STEM award and a $50 Westfield voucher for showing outstanding achievement throughout their STEM inquiry. Student work will be judged against a range of criteria, including STEM Knowledge, Understanding & Skills, as well as the Deep Learning global competencies of Creativity and Citizenship. This will be collectively judged by College Principal Ms Amor, the Head of Physical World Ms McClymont, and the G-STEM teachers Mrs Moraes and Ms Jones.
Here is the EventBrite link to secure tickets for this event. On the afternoon of the event, you will also be asked to sign in via the Check In QLD app, so please ensure you bring a device with you to do so. Light drinks and refreshments will be provided.
We look forward to seeing you at our Up and Atom G-STEM Fair on Tuesday 14th September from 4pm to 5pm.

With everything in our world a little unpredictable right now, I am reminded of the importance of Routines.
Simply put, routines help family life run smoothly. With routines, children feel secure and parents feel less stressed.
