Message from Kinetic about Bus Service
Our bus provider, Kinetic, have asked that we pass on a reminder to our community that students should pay a fare for the service, meaning tapping on and off with a GO card or showing a School Bus Pass or other appropriate concession. More information about this can be found at https://translink.com.au/tickets-and-fares
Students living in South East Queensland (excluding Kilcoy and the Sunshine Coast Hinterland):
- can use a child or concession go card (within the go card network)
- or they may be eligible for assistance under the the School Transport Assistance Scheme (STAS) or Non State Schools Transport Assistance Scheme (NSSTAS)
More information about concessions is available:

The first 5 weeks of term 3 have certainly flown by. I want to thank our families that engaged in Student-Led conferences this week. These interviews are important in the communication and collaboration between our dedicated teachers and valued parents and guardians. When our students know we come together to support their learning and success at our College, it assists them in understanding their strengths, goals and challenges and that we are progressing to best support their learning experiences. If you were unable to attend these meetings, please reach out to your child's teachers to have these invaluable conversations, so we can provide your child with the best possible educational experience at Foxwell.
On Wednesday we recieved the exciting news of our new Principal to Foxwell State Secondary College. Ms Melanie Harth will begin at Foxwell in week 7. She joins us from Springwood State High School and has many years of experience in education.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Foxwell families for welcoming me into the community. I have thoroughly enjoyed working at the College over the past 15 weeks and being part of your child's learning journey. I wish our Foxwell students and families all the best, and look forward to seeing and hearing the amazing opportunities that continue to be offered to our students as the college continues to grow.

Hi Year 8 families,
As you are aware, the Year 8 Assessment Calendar was sent home last week via Schoolzine. I recently surveyed the Year 8s about how many of them plan to use or engage with the calendar. Only 72% of those surveyed said they would be using it to plan their study or ensure their family know of upcoming tasks!
Although this means that the majority of our students plan on using the calendar, I encourage all families to ensure that your Year 8 student has interacted with the Assessment Calendar.
To do this you could:
- Ask students to check their school email or the Student Sharepoint to access the Assessment Calendar
- Print the Calendar and place it in a visible place in the home
- Discuss the dates outlined on the calendar and ensure your Year 8 student knows what assessment they have coming up in order to plan their time
- Discuss the fact that, at times, students may need to work ahead of deadlines in order to work around sport or family commitments
- Access task sheets via Seesaw to ensure your Year 8 student understands their current task, and support them to seek extra assistance from their teachers if needed (eg. via email)
The importance of purposeful conversations about learning can never be underestimated.

With assessment in full swing, a reminder also of our AARA (Access and Reasonable Adjustments) process for your Year 8 students. Extensions may be granted in the following instances:
- Accident and misadventure – factors outside of school that are beyond the student’s control
- ‘Sorry Business’
- Extended illness that has resulted in a significant period of absence (impacting assignments or exams)
- Planned absence when an internal exam is scheduled
To apply for an AARA, students can access the form required through the Student Sharepoint and click the link that says: "Assessment Extension Request."
Please communicate with the school as early as possible if you feel that an AARA may apply, as this helps us work together to support their success.
Remember, assessments are just one part of the journey. The goal isn't just grades, but the knowledge gained along the way. We've got a bunch of talented young minds ready to shine. Keep cheering them on!
Respectful Relationships Workshops
Next week, Tuesday 15th August and during Week 8, Tuesday 29th August our Year 9 students will have a visit from our School Based Youth Health Nurses. They will take part in a full day session focused on Respectful Relationships.
These sessions will inform students about gender, relationships, consent and sexual health.
Year 9 students will complete these sessions in their Activate class compositions.
Activate A-E will complete this in Week 6 and 9F-K in Week 8.
Normal timetabled classes will not run on this day.
All students will be involved in this but if you wish for your student to opt out, please send an email through to Head of Year, Sarah Wagstaff at swags8@eq.edu.au

Hello Foxwell families! Our Year 9 and 10 English students have all started work on their Term 3 tasks and should be working hard in class and reviewing, editing and rehearsing work at home to ensure they achieve success.
This term, students in English will be expected to draft their work in their class notebooks and will upload photos of their work to Seesaw each lesson so that you are able to check their progress and they are able to proofread, edit and rehearse their work at home as well. Students whose PLP outlines the requirement for assistive technology will be accommodated as required. Most of our English students will be presenting spoken tasks this term and will also be expected to record their presentation at both draft and final stage, including multimodal elements such as a PowerPoint (if required) and upload this to Seesaw as well. We would appreciate you checking your student's Seesaw account to check their progress and use of their lesson time over these next few weeks.
Please have a chat with your student about their ideas and when their English lessons fall. We have some really interesting and engaging ideas from our students and are very proud of them. We are looking forward to listening to our students’ speeches and helping them improve and recraft their work to the best of their ability. The dates for all tasks are also in our Assessment Calendar. Teachers will contact parents via email the week after drafts are due, if students have not successfully completed their drafts, in order to inform you and provide your student with time to successfully complete their work. If drafts are not submitted on time, students will not receive teacher feedback to assist them. If your student requires an extension of a draft or final due date, please ensure that you use the form on our website and apply for this at least 2 days prior to the due date or contact the class teacher or myself to discuss how we can best support your student.
Year 9 English
Our Year 9 students are working on a persuasive spoken pitch to Netflix about adapting the novel they have read into a film or TV show. Drafts for this task are due in the 3rd lesson of next week, which, depending on when your student has English, will be either Thursday or Friday. Students have had at least 2-3 lessons this week to brainstorm and plan their pitches and will have 2-3 lessons next week to work on these drafts in class. Finals for this task are due in the first lesson of Week 9, which will fall on either a Monday or Tuesday depending on when your student has English.
Year 10 English
Our Year 10 students are now in classes that will prepare them for their Senior English studies that have been discussed with students in class and at SET Plan interviews and based on previous English results.
Literacy Short Course
Students in this course will receive their Literacy Tick for their QCE upon successful completion of the course, setting them up for future success in Essential English in Senior. Students in this course are completing ongoing work on their Student Learning Journal with the draft for this due in Lesson 1 (Monday) of Week 8 and the final due in Lesson 3 (Thursday) of Week 9. They are also working on their Extended response to a social issue with the draft for this due in Lesson 3 (Thursday) next week and their final due in Lesson 3 (Thursday) of Week 7. This is the only course that are not presenting a spoken task this term.
Essential English Prep Course
Students in this course are working on a persuasive speech on the media’s portrayal of teenagers requiring them both write their script and record their speech for both their draft and final submission. Students have been working on their brainstorming and planning this week and will be drafting during class next week. As this is a spoken task, only verbal feedback will be provided by the teacher, which will be recorded and uploaded to Seesaw. Drafts for this task are due in Lesson 3 of next week, which may fall of a Thursday or Friday and finals will be due in Lesson 2 of Week 8, which will fall on a Tuesday or Thursday depending on the class your student is in.
General English Prep Course
Students in this course are working on a spoken monologue in role as a character of their choice based on a text of their choice requiring them to write their script and record their monologue for both their draft and final submission. They should also be reading a novel of their choice that is related to our inquiry question: 'What is love?' Students have been working on their brainstorming and planning this week and will be drafting during class next week. As this is a spoken task, only verbal feedback will be provided by the teacher, which will be recorded and uploaded to Seesaw. Drafts for this task are due in Lesson 1 of Week 7 (students need to submit at the beginning of the lesson), which may fall of a Monday or Tuesday and finals will be due in Lesson 1 of Week 8.
We appreciate you working in partnership with us so that students are able to use class time effectively and achieve success in English. All work and resources are provided in One Note for students to access at any time.
Please contact your student's class teacher if you have any further questions.

This semester our ALP students are working on their Engineering unit that follows a design process. Our Year 7 students are building bridges from popsicle sticks and glue that must span at least 70cm and hold as much weight as possible. Our record for weight to beat is 60kg! Our Year 8 students are building on the skills they acquired in Year 7 to build earthquake resistant buildings. Our Year 9 students are building on their skills learnt across their years in ALP to pursue their own choice of topics with the intention of educating a select group of people. Students are investigating a range of projects such as the beauty industry, advanced engineering and mechanics, future pathways, experiments in areas of psychology, social experiments and mentoring to name a few. Their outcome for their project is gaining knowledge and sharing this with select demographics that will alter the way they decide to deliver.
During our ALP lessons, students engage with each other and work collaboratively to apply critical and creative thinking that will solve problems. This involves defining, ideating, planning, discussing, prototyping, testing and reworking proposed ideas and solutions.
Years 7-9
We are well and truly into Term 3 as all Year 7 - 9 students have completed their Geometry formative exam this week. If your child has yet to complete their formative exam, due to absences, please contact their classroom teacher so a catch-up exam can be organised.
Formative Exams are not reflected on school reports but are used to inform the teacher on the knowledge and understanding of the student and the topics they have completed so that a more tailored approach can be implemented to support students who need a revisit of certain aspects of the topic to improve their outcomes in summative assessment.
For the remainder of Term 3, students will be working on Measurement, through the lens of the sustainable development goal "Sustainable cities and communities". Students will complete a summative assessment which is an assignment where they will connect real-world aspects of Geometry and Measurement to designing a garden bed (Year 7), Water Park Design (Year 8), and designing a rainwater tank (Year 9). Generally, students have approx. 6 in-class lessons to work on their assessment, but work does need to be completed at home and in personal time to allow for students to succeed fully in the assessment.
Year 10
Students have completed their first summative exam on Finance for this term where students made connections between simple and compound interest in simple familiar, complex familiar, and unfamiliar situations. From Week 5 onwards this term, students will be completing the algebra topic where they will be introduced to quadratic functions and graphs including expanding, factorising, and solving quadratics. They will also be making connections between graphs and algebraic functions of different types of relations which includes circles, hyperbolas, exponentials, and polynomials. The next summative exam for this term will be in Week 9 where students will be assessed on the quadratics topic which they have started in Week 5. Revision sheet and revision solution in preparation for the exam will be posted in OneNote and Seesaw and will also be messaged via Seesaw to parents during revision week in Week 8.
Year 10 Numeracy classes are completing a summative assessment which is a “Written learning journal” from Week 5 till Week 9 in class.
Year 10 Numeracy class approval forms
I am requesting your support in returning Year 10 Numeracy subject approval forms which have been emailed by Ms Tania Russell to Parents of MAT101A and MAT101B students earlier this term. I will send another email with the attachment to parents of the above classes only who have not signed the approval.
A paper copy of the approval form has also been given to students of the above classes to take home this week if you would like to sign a paper version. Please return the paper copy via your child to the classroom teacher or a signed electronic copy emailed to me.
Equipment
Once again I ask parents/carers to supply their child with an exercise book, pencil case, and scientific calculator. Scientific calculators are part of the stationery requirements, which were issued at the start of the year. Ipads are not allowed as exams are held under exam conditions and the use of a scientific calculator can differ from brand to brand. Getting to know the functions of a calculator takes time and students are significantly disadvantaged when coming to an exam without one. Quite often when I contact home to discuss equipment issues it turns out parents have indeed purchased all the equipment, but students are forgetting to bring it. If you could assist your child in this area that would be wonderful. As I often say, you wouldn't play a game of footy without taking along a ball.
If the purchase of one is due to hardship, please get in contact with me ASAP. Kmart and such places have them for approx $10. For Year 9 Maths, when we start trigonometry in Week 6 this term, students will be unable to complete the work unless they have a scientific calculator with these functions. Thank you for supporting your children to be successful in maths!
Mr. Kumar – Acting Head of Department Mathematics
skuma33@eq.edu.au
In Year 9 Science, students have been exploring chemical reactions, investigating questions such as:
- Do raw cashews provide the body with more calories than raw almonds, as modelled by combustion?
- What effect does ocean acidification have on the structure of oyster shells in hatcheries?
- What mass of zinc reacts with copper sulphate in self-heating cans to reach a safe temperature of 65-70°C?
They will submit a scientific experimental report at the end of Week 6. They will then explore radioactivity and the principles behind this, submitting an investigation into a radioactive substance at the end of Week 9
Year 10 Science students have been exploring physics and the motion of objects, specifically looking at the physics behind car safety. Students will submit their scientific investigative report at the beginning of Week 9.
There is certainly a lot going on in this space at the moment, and we're so glad we are able to share it with you.

All Technologies subjects are fully underway this term. As you can read below, there is lots of exciting work being completed by students and much learning occuring. For some, the importance of good literacy and numeracy skills is becoming evident, and for others, it's the ability to listen to instructions and think critically about their actions. The steady flow of learning activities and assessment tasks also means students are continually working to given deadlines which may require homework tasks or the use of WIN time for additional support. We ask for parental support in coaching students to show you their work and discuss their achievements no matter how small.
This newsletter, we wish to recognise Mr Smithers for his efforts at the College during Terms 2 and 3. Mr Smithers has decided to take personal leave for the remainder of the year. We therefore wish to welcome Ms. Vivian Kam as our newest member of the Technologies team. Ms Kam has a keen interest in design education. She will fill a number of classes while we continue to find additional staff.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our parents in support of our Health and Safety requirements. Over the past weeks, we have have achieved footwear compliance and a surge of Safety Agreements submitted by nearly all students participating in Technologies education. It is fantastic see that everyone is putting safety first.
My special mention and appreciation this newsletter goes to our Year 10 Cafe Culture students who produced some delicious muffins for the staff dinner during the student led conference night. The staff very much appreciated the gesture and found the muffins extremely satisfying.
In my previous newsletter article, I mentioned that a description of each Year 9 and 10 subjects would be provided. Since that newsletter, I thought it better to provide live snapshot of what our subjects are up to. So, here is a summary of what’s been happening in many of our studios, kitchens and workshops in the past week.
Year 7 Materials Workshop
Students are learning to draft technical drawings using orthogonal (2D views) and isometric (3D) projections. They have also reviewed their safe operatoring procedures for the vaious tools and equipment they will use in the coming weeks. Most classes have now entered the workshop and are learning to cut and shape time to reflect their drawn plans.
Year 8 Economics and Business
Students this week researched the demands placed on an entrepreneur and what it takes to design and develop a new product.
Year 9 Food and Nutrition
Students continued to develop their knife skills and used a varius kitchen implements to prepare the vegetables required for their Healthier Sausage Rolls. They made sausage rolls and furthered their understanding of the different nutrients required to develop a teenager's balanced diet.
Year 9 Industrial Technologies
Students conducted interviews with their identified clients/users to better understand their design problem and need. They then drafted their design brief and evaluation crtieria. Both documents will then be used to guide their generation of design ideas and possible solutions. In their practical session, students explored the use of different drill bits to create thru holes, counter-sink holes, counter-bore holes and system-32 pin holes. Students were also shown operating procedures for a biscuit jointer.
Year 9 – Mechanical Engineering Principles and Systems.
Over the course of the week, students have explored the fundamental concepts that power our complex machinery. Through a hands-on tutorial using cardboard, lego and other equipment, students have uncovered the secrets of gears, levers, and pulleys. Some students worked consistently to progress onto circuits, energy conversion and design.
Year 10 Circuits and Mechanisms
Students are continuing to develop their coding and robotics knowledge using Micro:bit controllers. They continued to practise their circuit diagram drawing skills through sketching and annotating the Micro:bit and its components. Students were also able to work through tutorials using block-code and scripting.
Year 10 Amazing Materials
Students investigated the hardness of timbers by conducting a bindell hardness test of three different species of timber. With great amusement, the students dropped small steel balls through plastic pipe in order to create an indent in Balsa, Pine, Tasmanian Oak, and Merbau from different distances ranging from 500mm to 4 metres. The students recorded their findings and will now calculate depth of indentation to identify the hardness of the timbers. Students will also use their findings to discuss why differnt materials
Year 10 – Design User Solutions
Students are developing their folios to problem-solve their identified design problem. They explored the use of timber, plastics, and metal materials in the design of products. While in the workshop, students learnt correct tool use to mark out and shape timber.
Year 10 Café Culture
Students this week produced vanilla cupcakes and assisted with the dessert for the student led conference night. They had to consider the exact weighing and measuring of the required ingredients, understand the specific terminology of the Standard Recipe Card and use the equipment as specified as well as time manage effectively. They evaluated their finished products.
Students across Year 7 and 8 Social World are in the busy beginning stages of assessment. Task sheets have been distributed and annotated on Seesaw. I encourage you to ask your students to show and explain their tasks to you and also to take note of the checkpoint due dates. One of the greatest ways that we can check for student's understanding is by having them explain something back to us in their own words. If your student cannot explain the task to you, I encourage them to check back in with their teacher for clarification.
It is important that students are meeting drafting due dates so that they can receive valuable feedback on their progress from teachers. Students will be uploading all planning and drafting work to Seesaw. If you feel like your student could benefit from extra support, I encourage you to reach out to their teacher or discuss WIN time with your student.
In Physical World, students have begun their Geography unit, and what better way to begin than getting their bearings with all the places of the world. Students have been engaging in blended learning including digital technologies and good old-fashioned Atlases. They have also started learning about landforms, including patterns of weathering and erosion in famous landforms like Uluru.
In Science, students have enjoyed getting practical in the lab investigating chemical reactions, including burning magnesium, reacting bicarbonate soda and vinegar, and observing the link between salt solutions and rusting. Students have made links between these chemical reactions and the chemical weathering that occurs in rocks. An example of this can be seen in landforms where oxidation occurs, producing beautiful orange hues, a symbol of the presence of iron oxide.
Year 8s have their scientific investigative report due in Week 8, and Year 7s have a 2-part science exam in Week 9.
There is certainly a lot going on in this space at the moment, and we're so glad we are able to share it with you.
Nahdia McClymont
Head of Physical World
As the school year progresses, it is important to emphasise the vital role you play in your child's study of Health and Physical Education. Your active involvement in monitoring their engagement in schoolwork and practical activities as well as communication with their teachers is essential for their success and overall well-being.
By regularly discussing your child's coursework, assignments, and due dates, you can gauge their understanding of the material and identify any areas where they might need additional support. Ensuring they are on track helps them stay motivated and confident in their studies.
Here are some practical steps you can take:
-
Set Regular Check-in Times: Dedicate a specific time each week to discuss your child's school progress in Healthy World/HPE. This consistency will help establish the routine of open communication.
-
Use Digital Tools: OneNote is our learning platform, and all course work is provided to students here. Ensure familiararity and monitor students completion of assigned tasks. Utilise email to stay in touch with teachers - this platform provides an easy way to exchange information and updates.
-
Encourage Independence: While supporting your child, also encourage them to take initiative in communicating with their Healthy World and HPE teachers. This helps them develop responsibility and accountability.
-
Ensure Preparedness: Encourage your child to have routine, preparing practical uniform (including a hat) for practical lessons and a fully charged iPad for theory days. Setting these out the night before is a great strategy.
- Foster Organisation and Time Management: Establish ways for your child to keep track of due dates, such as completion of homework and assessment tasks, by setting reminders, using a calendar or diary or even a poster.
Remember, your involvement and encouragement make a significant difference in your child's Health and Physical Education journey. By working together, we can ensure that your child receives the support and guidance they need to thrive academically and personally, through and in sport.
What an incredible term for the Arts at Foxwell. Students from all of our Arts areas have been achieving incredible results during Eisteddfod season and we could not be prouder of how they are representing our College while shining upon the stage.
Our Dance Troupe and Creative Voices performance teams took to the stage at the QUOTA Beenleigh Eisteddfod at the Logan Entertainment Centre and earned three second place trophies for their Hip-hop, Contemporary and Pom routines. While the Creative Voices students were awarded a Highly Commended certificate for their Musical Theatre piece. We are so proud of these students and their commitment to the Arts at Foxwell. The Dance Troupe have one more day of performances coming up as they take to the stage at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod later this month.
Week 4 brought the end of our Inter-School Sport Competition for 2023. The annual Inter-School Sports Competition was a resounding success, with students displaying our SPIRIT values of Teamwork and Perseverance. The success of the Inter-School Sport can also be attributed to the tireless efforts of the teachers and support staff who worked behind the scenes to ensure students were able to compete.
A big thank you to everyone involved and please enjoy a few action shots from our last gala day!

From the Instrumental Music Coordinator
The Gold Coast Eisteddfod season is upon us in the Instrumental Music world. The Foxwell String Orchestra performed at the Eisteddfod on Monday and achieved 1st place with a platinum award. Next week, our Band performs at the Eisteddfod on Monday evening, and the following week, our choir performs. Students are reminded to show up to every rehearsal and be on time and ready to learn. Ensembles are a team and we all need to work together to create the best possible team we can. Students have been working hard through lessons and ensembles throughout the year and to hear them all perform and represent the school will be an absolute pleasure. We wish them luck for the coming weeks!

The Foxwell Northern Collegiate Team have been working incredibly hard to receive donations from multiple different businesses in the local area, in order to support Australian wide charites including: Animal Welfare League, Rosie’s, Pregnancy and Family Support, Hearts Purple, Stationary Aid, Cancer Council and Hope in a Suitcase! While our students are actively supporting the community, they are also learning vital leadership skills; shaping them to be successful young adults in the future. Be sure to keep a look out for a Noodle Drive which will be taking place throughout the next few weeks. More information on this will also be provided on Student SharePoint.
THRIVE Program
For the last 5 weeks, a select group of Year 9 and 10 male students have been partaking in the THRIVE program. This program is run by Zeb Taia (former profesisonal Rugby League player) and the AIM Foundation, and facilitated by Mr Jesse Way. These students have been learning about the importance of opening up, being honest and respecting themselves and others. We are looking forward to seeing how these boys learn and grow and use these skills to spread kindness and demonstrate leadership in the school community.
I look forward to continuing to update our school community on all of the amazing success that our students are having here at Foxwell and supporting them in achieving their goals!

Gen STEM would like to formally invite parents and friends of Gen STEM students to our annual Up & Atom Gen STEM Fair!
This event will be held on Wednesday 13th September from 3:30-4:45pm. Please see the below letter of information, and sign and return the bottom section. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you at the fair!
This week is Dental Health Week so it is perfect timing to utilise the Dental Van that is now at Picnic Creek SS. As our MIND, BODY, MOUTH are all connected, it's great to have this service available for Foxwell SSC students (available to ALL students 4 years old till the last day of Grade 10).
Book a free dental check up, in the dental van, at Picnic Creek SS, on 1300 300 850.
